KANNADA

Karnataka is a very prosperous state in the Southwestern region of India and the birthplace of the Kannada script. This script is an abugida belonging to the Brahmic family and is used to write Kannada language, a major Dravidian language as well as many other minor languages such as Tulu, Konkani, Kodava, Havyaka, Sanketi and Beary.

The Kannada alphabet is said to evolve from the Bhattiprolu Brahmi which morphed into the Kadamba script around the 5th century and later developed into the 'Old Kannada script' in the 7th century. The standardized form made its appearance in the 19th century when the Christian mission organizations began printing books in the Kannada language.
