GURMUKHI

Punjabi is commonly spoken in the Indian state of Punjab and is an Indo-Aryan language is written in the Gurmukhī, an abugida script which is based on the Landā scripts. It is often referef to as Sikh script. The name is coined from the words ‘Guru’ (Teacher, Guide or Mentor) and ‘Mukh’ (Mouth). The literal translation is therefore ‘From the Mouth of the Guru’ but is often also taken as ‘The script of those guided by the Guru.’

The credit of creating uniformity in the script and systematizing it goes to Second Sikh guru Guru Angad Dev Ji in the 16th century. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy text of the Sikhs is entirely written in Gurmukhī. I
